I read a lot. It is one of my favorite things to do. It feels increasingly lonely to be a reader these days. The proof is in the numbers. The average American reads 5 books per year. Over half of us don’t read any. We spend, on average, less than 20 minutes per day reading.

I think the way we teach reading in this country is flawed. In some ways, tragically so.

Comedian Nate Bargatze sums it up for most of us when he says that he doesn’t read because “every book is just the most words... it doesn’t let up. Every page is just more words.”
